Google and Osaka University Develop AI to Create Songs with Brain Signals. A collaborative study by Google and Osaka University developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to create songs that match brain signals. This artificial intelligence can produce music that sounds similar to a song according to the brain signal of the person being scanned.

By scanning a person’s brain activity

AI technology can produce songs that match the genre, rhythm, mood, and instrumentation of the music that the individual has just heard. Now, researchers have built an AI-based channel, called Brain Music.

The technology uses brain imaging data to produce music that closely resembles the short snippets of songs a person is listening to while having their brain scanned. They describe the flow in a paper, published July 20 to the arXiv preprint database.

The scientists used brain scans previously collected through a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This scanner tracks the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain to see which areas are most active.

Using some brain-imaging information and song clips, the researchers first trained an AI program to make connections between musical features. Including the instruments used and their genre, rhythm and mood, and the participants’ brain signals.

Musical moods were determined by researchers using labels such as happy, sad, mellow, attractive, angry or frightening.

After being trained in information selection

The AI can turn previously invisible brain-imaging information into a form that represents the musical elements of the original song clip.

LM’s music was originally bred to compose music

From reading descriptions, a sort of relaxed violin melody backed by distorted guitar riffs. Music LM uses that data to create music clips that can be listened to online and faithfully emulate snippets of the original song. Although the AI captures some features of the original song much better than others.

“The convention in terms of reconstructed musical atmospheres and original music is close to 60%.” Timo Denk, a software engineer at Google in Switzerland, told Livescience reported by SINDOnews, Friday (4/8/2023).

The genres and instrumentation in

The reconstructed and original music coincide more often than chance might expect. Across all genres, AI can distinguish classical music with great accuracy.

Yu Takagi

Assistant professor of computational neuroscience and AI at Osaka University in Japan, the goal of the work is to explain how the brain processes music. As expected, the team found that listening to music activated brain areas in the primary hearing cortex, where signals from the ear are interpreted as sound.

Another area of the brain

Called the lateral prefrontal cortex, is important for processing the meaning of songs, but this needs to be confirmed by further research. This area of the brain is also known to be involved in planning and problem solving.

Interestingly

Previous research has found that the activities of various parts of the prefrontal cortex change dramatically when rappers freely improvise. “Future research could explore how the brain processes music of various genres or moods,” added Takagi.

This Starfield Technique Reduces the Anxiety of Ship Design

Starfield

One Starfield player recently discovered a way to deploy ship modules without allowing the game to choose where their linking doors should be placed at random. They quickly learned of this newly shared trick as it quickly spread on social media, which suggests that many Starfield fans were not aware of it.

The Add action, which by default corresponds to the A button on an Xbox controller or the G key on a keyboard, allows users to pick additional parts before dragging them to the desired location, and is the most versatile method of installing spacecraft modules in Starfield’s ship builder. However, if you use this technique to connect two modules with walkable interiors, the game will choose the placement of the connecting doorway at random.

Starfield

That’s not a problem when working with individual blocks that only have one entrance, but it might be frustrating when trying to build interiors for larger ship habs.

Fortunately, it turns out that by specifying such a position beforehand, it is feasible to stop the game from selecting a random space for a linking doorway. Starfield players can do this with a mouse and keyboard by first choosing the hab node where they want the access entry to go with a left click, then pressing the Add key and choosing the module they want to attach.

It is slightly more difficult to use this trick with a controller because you have to use the analog stick to hover over the target doorway node, hold both gamepad triggers, and then press A to access the module selection menu.

According to the number of upvotes for their most recent tip, Reddit user AlanCave recently described an alternative way for placing ship modules that appears to have assisted hundreds of players with their spacecraft design projects.

Since Starfield doesn’t actually explain the advantages of this alternative module installation method, even though the ship builder UI does give away its key and button combinations when hovering over a free node, the implication that many fans were unaware of the trick isn’t particularly surprising.
