Does this pollution problem affect only the lungs?

Of course not, there are consequences of coronary heart disease problems that can arise. Air pollution plays an important role in increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.

The main source of air pollution is emissions from combustion engines that run on fossil fuels, which include particulate matter such as ammonia, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide.

This air pollution is usually produced from various human activities such as machine operations in the industrial sector, as well as changes that occur in nature.

Interestingly, the size of particles in air pollution, especially PM2.5 particles, can have a significant effect on heart health.

The risk of coronary artery blockage can increase by as much as 13 percent due to air pollution with PM2.5 particles. In fact, the risk of heart failure can also increase by as much as 2.1 percent.

The mechanism behind this is that increased levels of Nitrogen Dioxide, carbon monoxide, and Sulfur Dioxide in air pollution can trigger oxidative stress, which then continues into an inflammatory process leading to the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries of the heart.

In fact, a study by Davood Abadi Z et al showed that there was a significant relationship between an increase in PM2.5 in the air 48 hours before admission to the hospital with the incidence of severe heart attack up to 3.7 times (risk range at 1.69-7.69 times fold).

Masks the solution?

Of course, masks can help protect against air pollution particles. There are various types of masks available, but not all of them are effective in protecting against air pollution.

Regular surgical masks are not designed to protect against air pollution particles and may not offer sufficient protection.

This type of mask is more intended to prevent the spread of droplets, such as those that occur when coughing or sneezing, from mask users to other people.

N95 masks, on the other hand, have been designed to filter out small particles and can provide better protection against air pollution. N95 means the mask can filter up to 95 percent of particles measuring 0.3 microns. PM2.5 which means particulate matter with 2.5 microns can certainly be filtered using N95.

However, these masks must be fitted properly to provide effective protection and may be uncomfortable to wear over long periods of time.

Masks also will not provide total protection against air pollution. While they can reduce the amount of particulate matter you inhale, they can’t protect against gases like carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide.

Also, long-term use of masks is not an ideal or practical solution to air pollution. Communities play an important role in reducing air pollution. Here are some things to do: Use private vehicles efficiently or switch to public transportation.

This aims to reduce exhaust emissions from motorized vehicles such as cars and motorcycles. Walk or use a bicycle. If you are going to a place that is not too far away, walking or using a bicycle can be a good choice to reduce air pollution.

Save energy. The use of lights and electronic equipment also contributes to air pollution. Therefore, turning off lights and electronic equipment when not in use can help reduce pollution.

Do “reuse” and “recycle”. Reducing the use and production of goods can help reduce pollution emissions. Avoid using plastic bags.

The use of plastic bags can be harmful to the environment because it takes a long time to decompose. Instead, use packaging that is easier to decompose such as paper bags.

In summarizing, the challenges we face in overcoming air pollution in Indonesia are not small. In fact, this is a global challenge that demands serious cooperation and action from all parties involved.

However, we must remember that every step, however small, in the right direction can make a big difference.
